Fluoroquinolone toxicity is a result of antibiotics that can result in extreme, whole-body effects that range that range from diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, to muscle pain as well as psychosis and depression. Floxing is also a reference to this.

Fluoroquinolones are not recommended for those who have suffered from dangerous adverse reactions from quinolone antibiotics or fluoroquinolones in the past. People suffering from kidney disease or those who have had organ donations should be considered.

Fluoroquinolones are the major component of quinolone antibacterials. These antibiotics have an atom of fluorine and are effective against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria.

Fluoroquinolones “kill bacteria” by blocking enzymes that are normally used to untangle DNA during cell replication. They typically cut DNA’s double-helix before passing another section through the gap to complete the cut.

However, quinolones are able to bind to enzymes and prevent the repair process from taking place. Researchers have added fluorine-containing atoms in the 1980s to the structures of quinolones. This allowed antibiotics to penetrate tissue throughout the body, including the central nervous system. Also, it improved their effectiveness against a broad range of bacterial infections.

Fluoroquinolones can be beneficial in situations where other antibiotics fail to provide sufficient effectiveness.

But, fluoroquinolones are often overused, just as many antibiotics. Many FDA warnings were issued to limit the usage of fluoroquinolones. They have been linked with serious side effects. A number of label changes are required, and some fluoroquinolones even come with black-box warnings.

What antibiotics are considered fluoroquinolones, and which are not?

These medications include the drugs ciprofloxacin (Cipro) gemifloxacin (Factive), Levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), and ofloxacin (Floxin).

What is the fluoroquinolone toxicity syndrome?

Signs and Symptoms

Fluoroquinolone-based drugs are associated with possible serious, lasting, and permanently disabling side effects, including toxicity to the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal system. Other symptoms of Ciprotoxicity include:

– Damage to DNA and mitochondrial dysfunction

– Brain Fog

– Peripheral Neuropathy

– Blurry Vision

– DNA Damage

– Gaba and Gut Deterioration can lead to anxiety or depression.

– Tendonitis

– Muscle Atrophy

– The reflexes are becoming more acute.

Low back pain, tendonitis and tendon rupture are some of the first indications of Ciprotoxicity. Fluoroquinolones can increase the risk for peripheral neuropathy by 47% over time.

Ciprofloxacin has been demonstrated to alter the topology of the mtDNA as well as inhibit the normal maintenance of mitochondrial DNA and its transcription. Tendinitis and tendon fractures could result due to damage caused to tenocytes by mitochondria caused by the fluoroquinolone treatment. It can also cause fatigue or inflammation.
